Welcome to my Blog!

Hello! As you know, I will be completing two of my pharmacy rotations in Kenya during June and July. I will be working at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya and serving a patient population that suffers from diseases that are unfamiliar to most of us here in the United States.

I am so grateful to have this opportunity, and I want to thank my family and friends that have supported me my whole life and are continuing to do so throughout this journey. You inspire me, and this would not have been possible without you!

Now... let the journey begin! I will be traveling with two other Purdue PharmD Candidates, Will and Messai (they call us candidates instead of students, since we are now on rotations- exciting, I know!). Will and I will be flying together, and Messai will meet us in Kenya. Our flight leaves from O'Hare on June 8th. Our journey will begin with an 8 hour flight to Amsterdam, where we will have a short layover. From Amsterdam, we will continue on another 8 hour flight to Nairobi (the capital of Kenya), arriving around 7pm Kenyan time on Tuesday, June 9th. We will spend one night in Nairobi and travel to Eldoret the next day (this is about a one hour flight), arriving on Wednesday, June 10th.

Note the time difference: Kenya is 7 hours ahead of US Eastern time, and 8 hours ahead of US Central time.

I will do my very best to keep you all updated on the exciting adventures and encounters that arise throughout my time in Africa. Some activities outside of patient care that I hope to explore include: a safari, white water rafting on the Nile River, running with a Kenyan (although I'm sure my running pace is about the same as their walking pace), and hiking. Feel free to let me know if you have any picture requests (I have already had a request for a picture of a cheetah), and I will see what I can do!

  1. Have fun Mal! I'll be following this... I have been told this rotation is a life changing experience, and I hope that you will be touched.

Speaking of touching...our business. Lets keep that state side. I'll make enough lettuce for you and I while you're on your little vacay. Don't contract anything. :)

  2. Thanks Ed ;) I know it's a lot of work, but I have complete faith that you can handle double the work for a couple of months.
(And thanks for the serious note too- I am so grateful for this opportunity)
